The School of Engineering and Applied Science at Ahmedabad University is inviting applications from researchers who advance composite materials through mechanical design, additive manufacturing, or functional electronic materials. We welcome candidates with deep expertise in any one of these directions and an interest in working across disciplines. Ahmedabad University is a multi-disciplinary research university that lays emphasis on high quality and impactful research and innovative hands-on teaching.
This is an opportunity to build an independent research programme while helping shape hands-on teaching in composites and materials. The School offers an MTech in Composites, developed in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association (ATIRA), alongside undergraduate and doctoral programmes. Its interdisciplinary setting creates room to connect material design and processing with devices, applications and industry needs.
Areas of interest
We particularly encourage applications in one or more of the following areas:
- Mechanics and engineering of composites. Fibre-reinforced and hybrid composites; mechanics, durability and failure; modelling and simulation; structural design; testing and nondestructive evaluation; sustainable or recyclable composite systems.
- Additive and advanced manufacturing. Additive manufacturing of polymers and composites; continuous-fibre printing; direct ink writing and multimaterial fabrication; process–structure–property relationships; scalable manufacturing and quality control.
- Functional and electronic composites. Conductive, piezoelectric and other responsive materials; shape memory polymers, self-healing materials, printed electronics; flexible or stretchable sensors; energy harvesters; electronic textiles and wearable systems; integration of devices into soft or structural materials, soft robotic materials.
Responsibilities: Establish an original research programme, publish influential work and pursue external funding and collaborations appropriate to career stage, teach and develop undergraduate and postgraduate courses and project-based learning in areas aligned with the candidate’s expertise; supervise student research, including doctoral work, work with colleagues across engineering, science and other fields, and build productive links with industry & research partners and contribute to programme development and the academic life of the School and University.
Required and preferred qualifications: Applicants should hold a PhD in Materials Science or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Textile Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. We seek evidence of research quality and independence, a clear future research direction, and a commitment to excellent teaching and mentoring. Postdoctoral, industrial R&D, or other relevant experience is valued.
The university encourages interdisciplinary research involving engineering and biosciences, materials engineering and environmental engineering, amongst others.
The candidate must have demonstrable exceptional skills in individual and collaborative research. The tenure-track positions lay equal emphasis on research and teaching.
